Emyslivost: digitising hunting-ground management across the Czech Republic

For Myslivecké hospodaření s.r.o. we built a web and mobile app that replaced hunters' paper records. Since 2019 it has been used by around a tenth of hunting-ground users in the Czech Republic.

The case study at a glance

Client
Myslivecké hospodaření s.r.o. from Velká Veleň near Děčín. The app's author and guarantor is hunter Josef Němec.
Challenge
Replace the paper records that hunting-ground managers are required by law to keep — for users without digital habits, and in hunting grounds that often have no signal.
Solution
A web app and a mobile app (iOS, Android) connected over shared data: records of catches, hunters and seals, maps, stand bookings, offline mode and automatic official reports.
Outcome
Live since 2019, used by around 10% of hunting-ground users in the Czech Republic, and the monthly Mysl 8 report takes five clicks.

01Starting point

From paper to the phone

By law, a hunting-ground manager has to keep extensive records: catches, hunters, hunting permits, control seals, cull plans and how they are being met, deaths, game counts and regular reports to the state game authority. Before, that meant notebooks, forms and counting by hand.

What needed solving

  • Manual reports and arithmetic errors

Reports were added up by hand from notebooks. It took hours, and a single copying mistake was enough for the figures not to match. Hunters also had to bring their catches to the manager in person for checking.

  • Bookings in a paper book

Hunters did not know about each other. They risked meeting at the same stand or disturbing each other's hunt — a safety risk, too.

  • No signal in the hunting ground

Forests and fields are not an office. The app has to work where the phone cannot find a network.

  • Users without digital habits

Many managers and hunters are older people who do not use technology day to day.

02Solution

One set of data, two tools

Emyslivost is two connected apps over shared data. The web app is the manager's main tool with full functionality; the iOS and Android app serves hunters in the field. A change in one shows up in the other straight away — and you sign in to both with the same email and password.

  • Everyone where they work

The manager at the computer, the hunter in the forest. The web has everything; the phone has what the field needs.

  • One account for both apps

The same email and password on the web and on the phone; the data is the same and current everywhere.

  • Rights by role

The manager connects hunters and sets what each person can see and edit.

03Who uses what

The same screen, different data and rights

Managers, hunters and hunting-ground holders and users all work in the same environment. Their screens are practically the same — what differs is which data each of them sees and what they may edit. The manager sets the rights.

The Emyslivost web app, list of catches: quick filters by month and hunting year, a table of catches with date, species, sex, hunt type, seal number, hunter and use of the game, and the buttons Add catch, Show on map, PDF and XLS
The real screen of the web app — the list of catches (in Czech). Names, seal numbers and account details are anonymised.
  • Hunting-ground manager

The hunting ground's main administrator. Sees all its data and can edit it.

    What they get on top

    • Approves catches reported by hunters
    • Issues seals and hunting permits
    • Keeps an eye on cull plans and generates the Mysl reports
    • Connects hunters and sets their rights
  • Hunter, club member or paying guest

Sees the data the manager has given them access to — in the field, usually on the phone.

    What they get on top

    • Reports catches with a photo and location
    • Books high seats and hunting sections
    • Sees their seals and the contacts of hunters in the ground
  • Hunting-ground holder and user

The same overviews, only for one or several hunting grounds at once.

    What they get on top

    • Overview of game management across hunting grounds
    • Progress of the cull plans
    • Site map and proposed boundary changes

04Key features

Features that save hours

Six places where the app changes day-to-day work in the hunting ground the most. Try them out.

A catch from the forest in a minute

The hunter takes a photo of the catch, marks the spot on the map and sends it. The manager gets a notification and approves or edits the catch. Nobody has to bring catches in for checking any more.

Works without signal

The app notices a weak signal and switches to offline mode by itself. Hunters download the data and maps of a chosen area in advance — the app shows how much data that is and how much space is left on the phone. A catch or a new site-map point can be entered without signal, and the report is sent automatically once the connection is back.

Once a week the app reminds users to refresh their offline data.

Official reports that write themselves

The monthly Mysl 8 report and the other reports (Mysl 4, 6 and 7) are put together from data collected throughout the year. No adding up by hand, no arithmetic errors. It takes the manager five clicks.

Real-time availability instead of a paper book. Hunters know about each other, do not disturb each other, and the hunt is safer. Booking works from the phone right in the field, too.

    05UX for everyone

So simple a seventy-year-old can use it

Even managers over 70 use the app with ease. For us, that is the strongest proof that UX designed for non-technical users works.

    • Hunters' language

The terminology comes from the author, himself a hunter. The app speaks like the people who use it.

    • As few steps as possible

Everyday tasks take a few taps. The monthly Mysl 8 report takes five clicks.

    • Everyone sees only their part

The manager sets rights by role — nobody is swamped with features they do not need.

    • Detailed guide

There is a detailed guide to every screen.

A domain expert and a technology partner

Josef Němec brought the know-how from practice; we turned it into software — from analysis through design and development of the web and mobile apps to operation. We have worked together since 2018 and keep developing the app.

    Skills involved

    Frequently asked questions

We designed, built and run the app together with its author, Josef Němec. That covers analysis, information system design, UX and UI, development of the web app and the iOS and Android mobile apps, the map subsystem, offline sync and cloud operation.
Development started in 2018 and the app went live in 2019. Since then we have kept developing and running it with the client — the collaboration continues today.
The app notices a weak signal and switches to offline mode by itself. Hunters download the data and maps of a chosen area in advance, and the app shows the data size and the free space on the phone. A catch or a new site-map point can be entered without signal; the report is sent automatically once the connection is back. More on how we build mobile apps.

Yes. From data collected throughout the year it puts together the Mysl 4, 6, 7 and 8 reports and helps set up cull plans (Mysl 1, 2 and 3). The monthly Mysl 8 report takes the manager five clicks, and the arithmetic errors of adding up by hand are gone.
Yes, Emyslivost is exactly that kind of project: the author brought the knowledge of the field; we brought analysis, design, development and operation. We work the same way in completely different fields — see our other references.
